day 4-Zubiri to Puerta la Reine

13 09 2007

before today exciting episode i need to clear up the Ádder thing.  i wasn´t and never have been bitten by a bloody adder! The woman in the Farmacia said it was probably a mozzy and that if i take these pills i´ll be okay. Only if your leg does swell to the size of a balloon should you seek medical attention. Now as my legs are normally the size of balloons I was obviously confused. Maybe it should be the size of really big balloons. Anyway it hasn´t stopped me walking, eating or drinking and my legs are no bigger than usual, so I conclude that all is well with my legs and i do not need to seek medical attention!

Due to the most excellent result last night (Scotland won) we got up late. As breakfast was a buffet you can imagine we ate and ate and ate. I allowed Alan to forgo the ´¨chewing what he has in his mouth before putting more in ¨´lesson because if he filled his cheeks full enough he´d probably have enough to chew on all day.

We left around 8am.

We returned around 8.05am. I forgot me stick.

We left again at 8.10am.

In order that he might feel lighter on his feet Al decide to opt for trainers and carry his boots. He was lighter on his feet, but heavier on his back…..

After an hours walking he decided he would rather be heavier on his feet…

This stop probably led to our first loss. Al´s shiny red hat. As we´d walked at least 50m from where it was probably dropped we decided not to return. Some lucky traveller would be the recipient.

As the sun was beating down kinda hard he fashioned a rather fetching headscarf out of his favorite red t-shirt. This still allowed me to pick him out from the other walkers when i reached the top of the next hill and looked back.

Okay, there are lots of stunning views and some beautiful old churches to see on todays trip but we kinda have to keep our mind on where are feet are going rather than whats around us.

By 2pm we reached Puerta after a final climb to the Refuge. As I entered lookin redder than the reddist thing ever the owner quickly sat me down and gave me water. Its okay I said in my best Spainish. I´m always this colour.

Showered, beered and now waiting for food. That is the way of the camino………..

Final thing – Photos. We got a lot but as yet can´t get access to download them.

When we do……………….

Please tell me that part of the day was spent with the two of you overtaking other walkers chanting “we’ll be coming, we’ll be coming, we’ll be coming down the road, when you hear the noise of the tartan army boys, we’ll be coming down the road” and Alan actually threw aforementioned shiny red hat up in the air in pure defiance of the so-called higher echelons of European football…merde!!! Best midfield since ’82, best tactics since the coat hanger system failed us in ’92!!

anyhoo, any chance of letting the proletariat know where you are in the world, how long you’ve travelled and how long to go? As bad as it was, it was still quite exciting watching Leven bumping up the Spanish coast for a month or so!

Si, things were far more adventurous when people thought you had been bit by an adder! Al, keep up the eating and walking lessons….I’ve gotta feeling that the two of you are going to do this.

Hey Ho, Lets go

ok, here’s the thing, my husband, the father of my child, has always packed as much food into his mouth as he can, its because he was the youngest of a large and rather unruly bunch of hoodlums, sorry brothers and you had to eat fast or you got no food. this said caitlin and i make alan eat with a towel over his head, its the only way simon.

Can,t talk for long – got to get to bed – have to DRIVE 500miles tomorrow – bit like your camino eh ! There does seem to be a great deal of interest in your various “bodily functions” – rickity knees, leg swellings, hot flushes, cheek swellings — yes I have all these too — I think it must just be my age !Glad Scotland won – that must have made you get your kilts on today and sing along with Kenneth M,Kellar -“heel for heel and toe for toe” Got to go Si has lost his hearing aid again
Note. Si as in Sandy — not Si as in Simon

Message to Jackie –

Which is exactly where on the walk? is it a quarter of the way through, 30 miles away? Having never tried the walk, I’m not too sure where Zubiri is! sorry if my ‘where are you in the world’ was a tad misleading, it was progress or lack of i was asking for. Cheers

Simon, do you want me to update your Map, folk will know where you are then – if they look at the map that is. Keep the subject titles to having the place names in them, and the Day number too, in big brother manner.

Have you been able to see all the comments you’re getting.

On the photos front, can you not take the pics with Simon’s phone, transfer them to Al’s blackberry by bluetooth, and then Al email them to me and i will put them up on the blog. Simple eh? Or Simon you can MMS message them to me.

Robin (your blogmaster)

message to alison kettles, compeed is a type of blister plaster. the string sounds like an alan mcewan invention to facilitate the hanging of laundry from his rucksack since he has been drying it on his head while ambling along, yes i am aware that i married an idiot.
